Mykola Dondiuk is a documentary filmmaker and director of photography. He began his career
working in television as a director of photography. In 2013 he became interested in documentary
and in the same year was involved in a shooting of the film “Crimea Sich” as an operator. A short
version of this film was welcomed and recognized by curators and American documentarists at
INDIE LAB workshop in 2014. To date work on the full version of the documentary is underway,
where Mykola takes part as a co-director. In 2014, as a director of photography Mykola worked on
a film about Crimean Tatars and their culture “Crimea Unveiled”.
In 2015, Mykola made his debut as a film director with a documentary “Everything is going
according to plan”. The film tells the story of activists fighting against illegal construction
projectsin Kyiv, fighting with armed men, police, officials, and the entire system which thrived on
lawlessness and corruption. The film premiered in 2016, at the DocuDaysUA, an international
documentary film festival on human rights. Later it was shown at local festivals and student shows
in Ukraine, to attract public attention to the problem of illegal construction. In one of his interviews,
Mykola says that he’s tired of social documentary storytelling, that now he thinks of another kind of
film. And for several years he disappears from the field of documentary. In 2018, Mykola returned
to documentaries. At the moment, he is working on a documentary feature film called "Chernobyl:
The Unknown Story". This is his collaboration with Maxim Dondyuk, the author of the photo
project "Untitled Project".. The film is about the Chernobyl area, the place of a global disaster. But
the story isn’t about the accident, it’s about those who lived there long before and about those who
are trying to keep lost memories and forgotten story. Mykola is always open and ready for
cooperation in the field of documentary cinema. In 2022, a full-scale war begins in Ukraine,
Mykola starts working on documentary projects that are somehow related to the war.
He is currently working on personal projects and is open to interesting and useful social projects.
