It all began with a thrilling idea of using gold nano-cages for enhanced drug delivery to cure cancer. For about two years in the lab, we carefully studied how different gold nanostructures, tiny particles shaped as solid spheres, hollow shells, and cage-like forms, absorb light and turn it into heat. We prepared colloidal solutions of each type, kept their concentrations and optical densities identical, and then exposed them to an 808 nm laser while measuring their heating behavior. Alongside the experiments, we ran computer simulations to understand why certain shapes performed better, focusing on how factors like wall thickness and porosity influence efficiency. This long process of synthesis, testing, and modeling allowed us to directly compare their performance and show that gold nanocages stand out as the most effective for photothermal applications.
