September 2020
Volunteering at Northampton General Hospital and Trust

My experience starting in the NHS was been through my role as a Response Volunteer which I applied for in September 2020. Dermatology – I was helping out in an administration role in dermatology supporting the team, responsibilities include the booking in and out of patient notes which requires attention to detail, I was also filing in medical records, booking in follow up appointment. I have also been looking at training on Camis to develop my knowledge of systems that they use and that can help me learn more. Interpreting I spent a lot of time supporting the maternity hub when they were based in Franklins Gardens interpreting for patients and the nurses (Russian/Romanian/Italian) and providing assistance Throughout my time as a Volunteer I was been involved in assisting in the sterilisation of hospital beds and logistics of removing them from wards and transporting them through the hospital, working with porters and the clinical team. Assisting with supporting patients speak to their family and friends through the video calling service the volunteers offer, which involved speaking to the patients and encouraging them to talk to the person contacting them, in the event that the patient is unable to communicate, then providing support and reassurance to the family/friend during the call, whilst at all times ensuring that the patients confidentiality is key as are those other patients on the ward are respected on not shown during a video call. Patient property – providing a link between the visitor and the patients when items are left for delivery to a patient, this can also involve passing on messages of support to the patient. This service also involves assisting visitors to the hospital and giving them direction to appointments, in some cases you can see that some visitors are distressed as they have to come to the hospital on their own as their so this also involves walking with them to where their appointment and being of comfort to them. Wards – attending wards to give patients company, this involves asking patients if they would like any of the volunteer items to pass time, this includes word searches, activity books, colouring books. It also involves asking the patients would like any company, to play cards, dominos or just to talk. Assisting in feeding those patients who are unable to feed themselves or just need help. Sitting with patients who just need to feel that they are not alone. Offering HCA’s assistance where needed, ie whilst a capable patient was on their video call I was able to offer assistance to a HCA stripping beds.
