Quantifying the hormogonia induction in the cyanobacterium Nostoc punctiforme
During my 9 weeks stay, I carried out experiments to establish a method with which hormogonia induction can
be qualitatively assessed in a reproducible manner. In particular, I set up experiments to induce hormogonia
formation in Nostoc cultures applying 1) red light; 2) dilution of the medium; and 3) hormognoia inducing factor
secreted by the hornwort, Anthoceros agrestis. After these treatment I monitored hormogonia formation in a
time series experiments to identify the most effective induction factor and the optimal time point after induction
to quantify hormogonia formation.

Host-pathogen interactions
I used to work in the laboratory in Finland, Jyvaskyla, in the group of Professor Lotta-Riina Sundberg. This group
focuses on understanding molecular details of host-pathogen interactions. This includes studies of evolution of
bacteriophage host range and infectivity, and resistance evolution in the bacterial host. My part was to study the
antibiotic-phage synergy.
