HALO Trust is the world’s largest humanitarian demining organisation, working to protect lives and restore livelihoods of people affected by conflict. The Interpreter will support the organisation’s mission by providing oral interpretation and written translation services at both the field and office level. The position will be based in Brovary, Kyiv oblast, with frequent travel, and will report directly to the Translations Manager.

Tasks and Responsibilities :

• Oral Interpretations: Provide interpretation services for national and international staff, including during field visits to minefields and for office meetings and workshops.
• Written Translations: Receive documents for translation and complete them in a timely manner and to a high standard. This may include translations for videos or the transcribing of audio recordings.
• Proofreading and Editing: Proofread/edit/update documents done by other translators as instructed by the Unit Commander/Translations Manager/Senior Translator.
• Continuous Professional Development: Dedicate time to learning and understanding the terminology and vocabulary unique to the humanitarian sector in general, and demining specifically. Analyse the terminology and abbreviations used in documents, compile glossaries of terms to ensure consistent use of terminology in the translation/interpreting process.
• Representation: When requested, accompany high-profile or priority visitors on field trips, provide oral interpretation services during meetings and events, or otherwise represent HALO Trust in a mature, responsible, and professional manner.
• Discretion: When requested, assist in conducting private or confidential translations or oral interpretations in a professional and mature manner and ensure full confidentiality of the matters and persons discussed.

Other: Undertake any other tasks as delegated by the Unit Commander, Translations Manager, the Head of Support Services, or the Programme Manager.

Communication :

• Communicates with contacts typically within the organisation, and some external to the organisation.
• Communication typically involves obtaining or providing information.

Knowledge and Personal Characteristics :

• Formal qualification in philology, languages, or a related field (preferred).

• Minimum of two (2) years of relevant professional experience in languages or translations, ideally within a humanitarian context (required).
• Fluent in Ukrainian, Russian, and English (required).
• Flexible availability with willingness to work remotely or as part of the operations cycle (weekend work with time off in lieu).
• Willing and able to participate in field visits, including to active minefields and rural or recently-liberated regions of Ukraine.
• Previous experience working within the humanitarian demining sector (preferred).
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Knowledge of computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools, such as Smartcat, MemoQ, Trados etc. (preferred).
• Strong attention to detail, with the ability to organise and prioritise a busy and ever-changing workload.
• Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
• Solid work ethic with the ability to work productively under pressure.
• Autonomous self-starter capable of working independently or as part of a team.
• Adaptable and flexible with the ability to prioritise competing tasks.
• Commitment to HALO Trust principles.

Terms and Conditions:

• Labour law contract (24 days of annual leave, paid sick leave).
• Working hours: 08:00—17:00, one-hour lunchbreak (40 working hours per week)
• Work schedule: 10/4.
• 24 days of annual leave.
• Daily allowance 800 UAH paid during business trips.
