Job description

Overall Purpose of the Job

Provide assistance to non-Ukrainian speakers across a range of activities. The Operations Interpreter and translator will make sight translations of documents and will provide interpretation services during various Humanitarian Demining processes such as trainings, internal operational meetings, daily operational activities, meetings held by National, Local Authorities and stakeholders among others. The Interpreter and Translator will provide accurate concepts and explanations with no additions or omissions as requested, and according to Mine Action concepts, definitions, and abbreviations.

Reporting structure

The Interpreter and Translator position reports to either CLMs or TFMs as assigned

Detailed Responsibilities

  • Support verbal communications between International and National staff through interpretation of English/Ukrainian language as required.
  • Interpreting with no additions or omissions.
  • Conduct translation of English/Ukrainian of training, administration and operations documentation as required.
  • Develop in Ukranian/English language a glossary of all relevant technical terms and definitions.
  • Conduct searches on training data as required.
  • Maintain and update all training data.
  • Completion of daily activitiy logs and other documentation if required.

General Responsibilities

  • Maintain strong working relationship with the CLMs, TFMs and TOM through cooperation and coordination of work and activities.
  • Work within the framework of MAG’s core values.
  • Maintain a professional behavior in all duties and responsibilities in line with MAG’s core values.
  • Contribute to other fundraising initiatives where appropriate.
  • Participate in meetings where relevant or as required.
  • Understand and uphold the standards outlined in MAG’s Safeguarding Framework, acting with due care and attention to safeguard the wellbeing of anyone that comes into contact with MAG’s work and reporting concerns if they do a rise.
  • Work in compliance with MAG’s Policies, including but not limited to, Equal Opportunities, Code of Conduct and Dignity at Work Policies.
  • Undertake and apply learning from appropriate training and development programs.
  • Undertake any other duties within the scope of MAG HMA programming as required.

Person selection criteria

The post holder should be able to demonstrate the following attributes:

  • Excellent/very good written and spoken English.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work to work plans and objectives with minimal supervision.
  • An attitude and ability to travel/stay in the field when necessary.
  • Ability to communicate and interpret effectively, sensitive and difficult managerial issues directly from internationals to national staff.
  • An understanding of NGOs and a commitment to humanitarian work.
  • Must be computer literate with MS Office, particularly, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. (Formal qualification is not necessary but must demonstrate proficiency)
  • Well-developed organizational skills.
  • Working understanding of filing systems and file management.
  • Accuracy with figures and the ability to create charts and tables and identify trends.
  • An ability to write clear, concise, factual reports.
