Suncor Refinery, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada – Suncor Refinery Projects. Civil/ Structural Engineer/ Lead responsible for execution of projects at Suncor Refinery by civil/ structural group. Prepared task orders and New Project Information Sheet (NPIS) and risk classification forms at the initiation stage of the project. Responsible for developing projects at different stages staring from Scoping Study, Design Basis Memorandum (DBM), Frond End Engineering design (FEED), Engineering Design Specification (EDS) and Execution, to Commissioning and Start Up.
While executing the Suncor Refinery projects, certain requirements are to be achieved, including executing projects within live plants, without causing any disruptions to technological process. Another aspect of working at the refinery is being involved in Turn Around/ Shut Down periods when quick thinking based on professional experience are really a considerable asset. Responsible for dealing with steel contractors, and providing them with sketches, and controlling the execution process was another important aspect of working at refinery. The most significant executed projects, included:
• Replacement 68F-1 Boiler in 2023. Project with total installation cost of over $ 50M and civil/ structural work of over $1.5M. Two concrete foundation, four structural steel, one architectural and civil packages were prepared within over five thousands engineering and drafting hours
• Refinery Fall Protection Program, which is in place to identify, design and implement projects that deals with safety and improving fall protection throughout refinery
• 8C-2 Spent Hoper Reliability - this project involved the planning of new circular platforms around the vessel. All platforms were designed as shop welded frames with bolted connections to supporting clips, welded to the vessel skirt
• Replacement of Piping Supports Piles at Tank 316 –existing piles were frost heaved and therefore needed substitution with new ones. Old steel sleepers were also replaced with new steel. Erection process had to be developed in CWP to show/ describe all stages of the installation
• 19BD29 Flare Line Replacement – provided new platform to serve the valves. Platforms were designed and installed utilizing clamps bolted around pipes, so there was significant saving on the project by avoiding foundations (concrete piles) and steel supports
• Utilities Access Platforms – to provide means (mostly stairs) to connect different plants in one unit to simplify movement and improve safety of the Refinery personal.
• Suncor Edmonton Refinery – spent 9 years working as civil structural lead from office located within refinery. As the Project Manager and Lead Engineer I was responsible for managing active refinery projects with most of the civil/ structural scope, and estimating project costs for future development. Developed technical specifications and proposals on existing conditions of the structures and foundations. Developed project execution procedures and managed hours spent on the projects through Engineering Management Systems. Checked engineering drawings and specifications prior to issue for construction. Provided technical / field support at the construction stage of the projects.
2007 – 2011

Suncor (Petro-Canada), Edmonton, Alberta, Canada – Suncor Projects. Civil / Structural Engineer responsible for design, calculation, modeling and presentation of the steel structures for Front End Engineering Design and Detailed Engineering at the Petro–Canada Refinery in Edmonton. Duties also included design and calculation of the foundations (piles and pile caps), checking existing foundations for new loads based on the new National Building Code.
Performed calculations of soil capacity for new and existing foundations, depending on site soil reports. Designed and calculated different approaches to reinforce existing steel structures depending on the present and new loading conditions. Civil work design included unloading concrete pad and access road for sulphuric acid facilities supplying data sheets to Contractor for surveying services.
Responsible for writing technical specifications and project execution plans for specific projects and presenting this to the client at the approval meetings. Developed execution procedures and dealt with Contractors to schedule their participation.
Took part in budgeting cycle for new projects, estimating cost and imputing this data into the Engineering Estimating System. Checked and reviewed structural, civil and shop (steel) drawings, site visits, making field sketches. Took part in construction coordination of the projects, including creating a “punch list drawings” and “as built” drawings.

Suncor Energy, Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada – MSF Building. Senior Structural Designer responsible for modeling of the MSF building in 3D and producing 2D drawings. Duties also included designing platforms, stairs, floor, layouts, solving steel/ piping interference problems and design structural connections.

Civil / Structural Designer responsible for the design and modeling of the underground piping system (modeling all existing underground pipes, going to site and establishing a new location of piping system, modeling new underground pipes in 3D and creating 2D drawings).
Petro-Canada, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada – Refinery Pipe Supports. Civil / Structural Designer responsible for the design and modeling in 3D of the pipe supports (connections to existing structures), calculations of structural members, and solving problems on site. Duties also included design of structural connections and solving existing steel/ new piping interference problems.
