The use of technologies can influence the quality of care in hospitals in various ways, such as improving patient experience, enhancing clinical decision making, optimizing operational efficiency, and reducing costs and errors. In this essay, I will discuss some examples of how technologies can benefit both patients and providers in different aspects of hospital care.
One way that technologies can improve patient experience is by using wearable devices and mobile apps to monitor their health conditions remotely and provide timely feedback and interventions. For instance, patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes or hypertension can use smart watches or sensors to track their blood glucose or blood pressure levels and receive alerts or reminders to take medications or adjust their lifestyle behaviors. This can help them manage their conditions better and avoid unnecessary hospital visits or complications 1.
Another way that technologies can enhance clinical decision making is by using data analytics and artificial intelligence to assist providers in diagnosing, treating, and preventing diseases. For example, by analyzing large amounts of patient data from electronic health records, lab tests, imaging scans, and genomic profiles, providers can use predictive models to identify patients at risk of developing certain conditions or complications, such as sepsis or heart failure, and provide personalized and preventive care 2. Moreover, by using computer vision and machine learning algorithms, providers can improve the accuracy and efficiency of detecting signs of diseases in fields such as radiology, dermatology, or pathology 2.
A third way that technologies can optimize operational efficiency is by using digital tools to streamline workflows and processes in hospitals. For example, by using bi-directional video feeds, cameras, TVs, and wireless infrastructure, hospitals can offer telehealth services to patients in remote or rural areas, reducing travel time and costs for both patients and providers 3. Furthermore, by using decision-support systems and health analytics, hospitals can improve patient flow, staffing, scheduling, and supply chain management, reducing bottlenecks, delays, waste, and errors 2.
In conclusion, the use of technologies can influence the quality of care in hospitals positively by improving patient experience, enhancing clinical decision making, optimizing operational efficiency, and reducing costs and errors. However, there are also some disadvantages and challenges associated with technology adoption in healthcare, such as privacy and security risks, ethical and legal issues, technical difficulties, human factors, and resistance to change 4. Therefore, hospitals need to balance the benefits and risks of technology use and ensure that they are aligned with their goals and values.
