INTERSOS Ukraine is a subdivision of the international humanitarian organization INTERSOS (Italy).

We provide support to victims of emergencies, armed conflicts and natural disasters with particular attention to the most vulnerable categories: children, women, elderly people, displaces persons, who were forced to flee their homes and moved to safer places and also to those who cannot leave the dangerous regions and are under constant threat.

INTERSOS teams are present in Odesa, Kyiv, Kharkiv, Mykolayiv, Kherson and now expand their activities in Sumy.

INTERSOS Ukraine provides economic, humanitarian and medical aid, psychological support, organizes educational activities, gives medicines and equipment to the hospitals, provides shelter and ensures basic human needs. During one year of our work in Ukraine we provided support to more than 100 000 people. 75 000 of them received aid in the sphere of protection, prevention and emergency care. 3 000 medical consultations were carried out in remote regions, which are not covered by the official heath care system. 49 medical institutions received medicines, medical devices and equipment.

We are opening a vacancy of the Protection Team Leader

Location: Kharkiv

Duration of contract: till 31/12/2026 with possibility for extension.

hierarchical: Protection Activity Manager

functional: Protection Technical Referent / MHPSS Specialist

Main Purpose:

Under the direct supervision of the Protection Activity Manager and the technical supervision of the Protection Technical Referent / MHPSS Specialist, the Protection Team Leader is primarily responsible for ensuring the overall implementation of activities to address protection needs while meeting quality standards. The Protection Team Leader will directly supervise the day-to-day work of the MHPSS Counselors and Social Workers and Outreach facilitators in their district (s). They will also provide weekly/monthly reports to the PAM and Protection Technical Referent

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Direct supervision of Social Workers, MHPSS Counsellors and Outreach facilitators;
  • Conduct an initial assessment with new Social Workers and MHPSS Counsellors; prepare & implement a tailored induction plan including shadowing, observing and conducting role plays;
  • Ensure adherence of MHPSS Counsellors and Social Workers to protection principles, code of conducts and internal SOPs;
  • Conduct weekly case conferences to help Social workers and MHPSS Counsellors handle critical and difficult cases;
  • Review the work of the MHPSS Counsellors and Social workers to ensure that the Protection and PSS needs of the community are addressed through our intervention;
  • Identify staff gaps and training needs when they arise and communicate them to the Protection
  • Technical Referent for his/her action;
  • Coordinate with the PAM to lead all day-to-day Protection and PSS activities in the hromadas;
  • Ensure weekly activity plans are created and clearly displayed in PSS activity locations;
  • Identify opportunities for new protection interventions and support assessments and developments of new project proposals;
  • Support the MHPSS Specialist and Coordinator, in the development of complaints mechanisms for beneficiaries and make sure complaints are addressed properly;
  • Ensure the Referral Database is updated on a weekly basis and submitted to the PAM and Protection Technical Referent;
  • Write and submit weekly/monthly reports to the PAM;
  • Manage all requests for information/intervention from the PAM;
  • Ensure dissemination of clear and reliable information on service provision and other pre-selected key topics;
  • Submit weekly and monthly activity plans, reports and recommendations;
  • Represent the organization at general coordination working groups and clusters with donors, humanitarian actors and local authorities, when requested;
  • Carry out all tasks respecting key protection principles including but not limited to: PSEA, do no harm, non-discrimination, confidentiality, accountability and need-to-know principles;
  • Any other tasks assigned by the MHPSS Specialist / Protection Coordinator.
  • Plan and design the Community Based activities in collaboration with the Specialists, the Protection Technical Referent and all the team members, accordingly to INTERSOS guidelines on activities;
  • Ensure MHPSS Counsellors and Social workers have the appropriate resources necessary for conducting group activities.
  • Ensure all Community spaces — WGSS / CFS (Women and girls safe space / Child friendly space) are designed as per internal and International guidelines and collaborate with CBPO in the establishment of the same.
  • Ensure that the Guidance and advice provided by the MHPSS specialist and Protection Technical Referent are followed by the team and provide feedback to them.
  • Ensure that the Protection / PSS needs of the community are properly assessed, mapped and analysed and work with the Protection Technical Referent and MHPSS specialists to fine tune our intervention to address the needs.
  • Ensure all tools for assessment and measuring impact are used properly by the team.
  • Ensure the Referral Database is updated on a weekly basis and submitted to the PAM / Protection Technical Referent.
  • Ensure proper storage of sensitive data through a correct use of internal databases.
  • Assist PAM / Protection Technical Referent in the planning and facilitation of the induction process for all newly recruited Social/PSS Workers on protection principles, the case management process, the relevant SOPs and the data filing and storing procedures (and other relevant topics).
  • Assist the Protection Technical Referent in planning and delivering capacity building trainings for Social Workers and MHPSS Counsellors and Outreach facilitators;
  • Receive external and internal referrals in line with set criteria and allocate them amongst.
  • Social/PSS workers; ensure that referring agencies receive timely feedback on actions taken, when necessary and appropriate in light of confidentiality requirements.

Job Requirements:

  • BA in relevant field (Social Science or related field)
  • Minimum 3 years relevant professional experience in the protection sector (of which at least 1 year in a supervisory role)
  • Computer literacy (Word, Excel, Power Point)
  • Good leadership skills
  • Strong technical knowledge in general protection (i.e. protection monitoring, case management, psychosocial support activities)
  • Respect and non-discriminatory attitude
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong data collection skills
  • Strong planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and as part of a team
  • Proficiency in English is an asset
