Remote Area Emergency Clinical Nurse

Responsibilities and skills involved
• Employed as a Clinical Nurse in various extremely isolated & remote
locales
• All Aboriginal communities with challenging burdens of chronic
disease, socio-economic hardship, paucity of resources, mental
health crises, EtOh & drug related violence and the most extreme
geographic isolation in the entire country
• Wet-season access to most communities (with the exception of Alice
Springs) impossible for 4 to 6 months of the year due to weather
related road conditions
• All acute emergency, road ambulance & aeromedical case
preparation performed by on-site CN’s, RN’s, Indigenous Health
Workers & community ambulance driver
• Facilities typically consist of a 1 to 3 bay ED only - No acute beds
• 1 or 2 Dr’s sometimes present for Primary Care FIFO clinic no
more than 3 days of the week at best
• No doctors on staff
• Extremely high autonomy role
• All cases of emergency presentations requiring medical
consultation are performed by voice and or video telemedicine with
RFDS or Retrieval Services Queensland
• All cases of concern are triaged & evacuated via fixed wing air
ambulance (typically Royal Flying Doctor Service - QLD Division)
• Assessment, treatment, and stabilisation of low to high acuity
emergency cases
• Cannulation, pathology, simple & complex wound management,
acute trauma, maternal & neonatal emergency care
• Community engagement for public health issues including sexually
transmitted diseases, rheumatic heart disease, scabies & ‘sores’,
alcohol & drug cessation, domestic violence, school attendance,
Qld Police Service cooperation
• An extremely challenging yet enjoyable role - I plan on pursuing a
career in advanced practice rural & remote emergency clinical care
