Job Title: Mechanical Engineer / Heavy Equipment Maintenance Consultant

(Demining & Agricultural Machinery)

Location: Online, with possible short-term travels in Ukraine

Level of Effort: Part-time / As-needed basis during TPM cycles

Reports to: Relevant Methodologist Lead

Duration: 3 months initial contract with possibility of extension

Purpose of the Role

Mechanical Engineer / Heavy Equipment Maintenance Consultant

(Demining & Agricultural Machinery) will be responsible for conducting in-person and remote data collection as part of the monitoring activities. Working in close coordination with the Methodologist Lead, Mechanical Engineer / Heavy Equipment Maintenance Consultant

(Demining & Agricultural Machinery) will gather primary data from project beneficiaries, implementing partners/private sector firms, communities, local administrations, and other stakeholders. Their work will contribute directly to data collection, verification, and collecting feedback to support accountability and program improvement.

Scope of Expertise 

  • Maintenance and repair of heavy machinery, including:  demining support vehicles, tractors, combine harvesters, and agricultural equipment , tracked and wheeled engineering vehicles 
  • Familiarity with equipment from multiple manufacturers, including international and regional brands 
  • Mechanical systems: diesel engines, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, transmissions and drivetrains 
  • Diagnostics, fault identification, and repair planning 
  • Preventive maintenance systems and lifecycle management 

Responsibilities

  • Advise on maintenance, repair, and overhaul solutions adapted to available resources 
  • Support development of  standardized maintenance procedures applicable to mixed equipment fleets 
  • Advise on spare parts compatibility, substitution, and sourcing 
  • Support training of operators and mechanics on safe and efficient equipment use 
  • Liaise with equipment suppliers, manufacturers, and service providers as needed 

Essential Requirements

  • Degree or vocational qualification in Mechanical Engineering, automotive engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven hands-on experience with heavy machinery fleets comprising equipment from multiple manufacturers.
  • Experience working with local manufacturers, installers, or subcontractors in Ukraine.
  • Prior work in war-affected or post-damage environments (e.g. partially damaged buildings, urgent retrofits) is a strong asset. 
  • Basic digital literacy, including use of smartphones, tablets, or other electronic devices.
  • Willingness to travel within assigned regions, sometimes at short notice and in challenging conditions.
  • Understanding of confidentiality, safeguarding, and Do No Harm principles.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience supporting humanitarian demining or land clearance operations 
  • Experience with machinery adapted for hazardous or post-conflict environments 
  • Ability to work with mixed fleets and non-standardized  equipment 
  • Experience developing maintenance SOPs and training materials
