Duties and Responsibilities:

Company Security and Safety Officer
Detailed Duties prescriptions:
- Communication and implementation of the safety and environmental protection policy;
- Evaluation and review of the effectiveness of the safety management system;
- Reporting and analysis of non-conformities, accidents and hazardous occurrences;
- Maintaining ISM certification and organising and monitoring of internal audits;
- Appropriate revisions to the SMS; and
- Ensuring that adequate resources and shore based support is provided.
- Acting as Company Security Officer (CSO) and carry out internal ISPS audits for designated ships within the required timescales.
- Controlling and monitoring the risk for assigned vessels and to act as part of the risk assessment team for shipboard procedures and operations when called upon to do so.
- Monitoring the voyage and operational performance of assigned vessels providing assistance to the Master as necessary.
- Conducting vessel inspections and audits to confirm compliance with SOLAS, MARPOL, LoadLine, STCW, ILO Conventions and applicable industry codes. Verify that any corrective action is agreed and implemented within the required timescales. Ensure outstanding defects are reported to the Fleet Manager.
- Maintenance records of accidents, incidents, near misses and non-conformance reports. Contribute fully to the investigations and verify that investigations are carried out effectively and that appropriate corrective action is agreed upon and implemented in a timely manner.
- Co-ordinating the provision of specialist advice on all marine and operational matters, actively promoting and supporting the development of effective professional working partnerships between Senior Officers on board vessels and the ship management team ashore.
- Evaluating vessel requirements with regard to mooring ropes, marine and safety equipment.
- Assisting line management with the functioning of the QSM and monitoring that adequate training is being provided.
- Acting as a member of the Emergency Response Team during an emergency.
- Arranging third party inspections and flag state inspections and co-ordinate response.
- If required, handling/liaising with the Master on P&I and Insurance claims.
- Monitoring shipboard drug and alcohol testing.
- Interviewing and briefing Senior Officers on QSM matters during office attendance. Ensuring they have an understanding of the company’s policies and standards of performance expected and the support available from the management team shore.
- In liaison with Fleet Superintendents ensuring that Performance Appraisals are conducted for Senior Officers on board assigned vessels as per QSM Procedures.
