men passed him and whispered his name. Once, such attention had delighted him, but now he was weary of hearing it.
Lately he had often escaped to a small village where no one knew who he was. There he had met a simple girl who
believed him poor and innocent. She possessed the purity he himself had lost.
At home, he dismissed his servant and lay in the library thinking of Lord Henry’s words. Could a man never truly change?
He longed for the innocence of his youth. He knew he had corrupted himself and others, taking pleasure in cruelty and
influence. Yet perhaps redemption was still possible.
He remembered the fatal wish he had once made—that the portrait should bear the burden of age and sin while he
remained forever young. That wish had ruined him. Punishment, he thought, might have purified him better than eternal
beauty ever could.
Taking up the mirror Lord Henry had given him years ago, he stared into his flawless face. Once he had adored that
beauty; now he hated it. In anger he threw the mirror to the floor and crushed it beneath his heel. His beauty had been a

men passed him and whispered his name.
His beauty had been a
mask, his youth a mockery.
Thoughts of Basil Hallward and Alan Campbell passed through his mind. Basil was dead by his own hand; Alan had

him not to go, but Dorian refused.
At that moment Basil Hallward called them back into the studio. The portrait was finally complete. Lord Henry admired it
greatly and invited Dorian to look at himself. As Lord Henry and Dorian left together, Basil watched them with growing pain,
sensing that something dangerous had begun.
Standing before the painting, Dorian saw his own beauty as if for the first time. The portrait captured all the perfection
of his youth, and the realization filled him with both wonder and fear. He understood that while the painting would
remain forever young, he himself would grow old and ugly.
In despair, Dorian cried out that he would give everything—even his soul—if only the portrait could age instead of him.
Basil was shocked by the sudden change in his friend. Dorian became angry and accused Basil of valuing art more than

“Harry, Harry, it is dreadful!” cried the lad.
“It is quite true, Dorian,” said Lord Henry gravely. “All the evening papers contain
