About Project Expedite Justice
Project Expedite Justice (PEJ), founded in 2016, is a United States-based NGO with a 501(c)(3) charitable organization designation.
PEJ’s mission is to use all available legal options to seek justice for individuals inadequately protected under the law, who cannot access legal resources, and who are exploited by governments, corporations, or others.
PEJ applies a novel, victim-centered approach to addressing mass atrocities. PEJ’s 3-step model includes training, mentoring, and providing independent legal consulting. We partner with and train local lawyers and investigators to collect, analyze, and preserve evidence in accordance with international legal standards. Without evidence, there can be no accountability. We further build local capabilities and advance the justice process through case-specific mentoring and strategic guidance to local legal practitioners and investigators. Finally, we partner with local NGOs, pro bono law firms, and legal clinics to represent victims of international crimes and serious human rights abuses in court or alternative judicial mechanisms.
PEJ has projects in several countries. Our inclusive team includes people working remotely from Africa, Asia, Europe, South America, and the US. We are deeply committed to increasing opportunities for lawyers and other human rights defenders from the global majority or the Global South to participate in international rule-of-law-based nonprofit work.
The Opportunity: Digital Platform Designer
The Digital Platform Designer, reporting directly to the Project Lead and the Information Management Officer, is responsible for designing the user experience and interface of the Digital Justice Hub to ensure it is intuitive, accessible, and effective for justice sector practitioners. The Digital Platform Designer develops user-centered design solutions that enable prosecutors, investigators, judges, and other justice actors to quickly access learning materials, practical tools, templates, guidance documents, and knowledge resources while working in demanding operational environments.
The Digital Platform Designer works closely with the Platform Product Manager, Full Stack Developer, E-learning Expert, Legal Education Expert, and end users to create a platform experience that supports efficient navigation, clear information architecture, and effective knowledge transfer. The role ensures that design decisions are informed by user needs, platform analytics, feedback, and evolving project requirements.
About the Project
The Justice Bootcamps project is a national program designed to strengthen police, prosecutors, Ukraine Security Services (SSU), and judges (hereinafter, «justice actors») practices across four frontline oblasts, where more war crimes reports have been recorded. This initiative delivers targeted workshops, providing technical assistance and operational support directly to justice actors handling war crimes and crimes against humanity cases. PEJ’s approach leads to immediate, targeted skill-building that increases capacity and equips frontline justice actors to prosecute Russian international crimes.
The project is structured around two mutually reinforcing goals: (1) strengthening frontline police, prosecutorial, and judicial capacity through intensive, practical Bootcamps and ongoing expert support; and (2) institutionalizing knowledge and skills within Ukrainian justice institutions to promote long-term sustainability, professional development, and interagency cooperation.
Recognizing that needs vary across oblasts, the project tailors its activities to address priority challenges in each participating region. Through a practical «learn-by-doing» methodology, Justice Bootcamps supports justice actors to strengthen their ability to investigate, prosecute, and adjudicate war crimes and crimes against humanity, helping ensure meaningful access to justice for survivors in Ukraine.
Key Deliverables:
- User-centered platform designs supporting efficient access to learning and knowledge resources.
- Information architecture, navigation systems, and content structures optimized for practitioner use.
- Wireframes, mockups, prototypes, and user interface designs are developed and maintained.
- User testing findings, usability recommendations, and design improvements are incorporated into platform development.
- Accessibility and usability standards are integrated into platform design and user experience decisions.
- Design assets, style guides, and interface documentation supporting consistent platform development and maintenance.
Key Responsibilities:
User Experience Design
- Design intuitive and user-centered experiences that support rapid access to educational content, templates, guidance materials, and knowledge resources.
- Develop user journeys, workflows, interaction patterns, and navigation structures that reflect the needs of justice sector practitioners.
- Conduct user research and gather feedback to understand user behaviors, challenges, and priorities.
- Translate user needs and project requirements into practical design solutions.
- Continuously improve platform usability through iterative design and testing processes.
User Interface Design
- Create wireframes, mockups, prototypes, and visual designs for platform features and functionality.
- Develop clear and consistent interface components, layouts, and interaction standards.
- Support the creation of responsive designs that function effectively across devices and screen sizes.
- Collaborate closely with developers to ensure accurate implementation of design specifications.
- Maintain consistency across platform pages, learning modules, and digital resources.
Information Architecture and Content Organization
- Design an information architecture that enables users to locate resources efficiently.
- Structure content libraries, learning pathways, templates, and knowledge repositories in intuitive ways.
- Develop navigation systems that reduce complexity and support efficient user workflows.
- Collaborate with educational and technical teams to ensure content presentation aligns with learning objectives.
- Support long-term scalability and maintainability of content organization systems.
Accessibility and Usability
- Promote accessibility, readability, and inclusive design principles throughout the platform.
- Identify and address usability barriers that may affect user engagement or performance.
- Ensure platform design supports users operating under time constraints and high-pressure environments.
- Apply best practices in user-centered design, accessibility, and digital learning environments.
- Support quality assurance reviews related to user experience and interface functionality.
User Testing and Continuous Improvement
- Plan and support usability testing activities throughout platform development and deployment.
- Analyze user feedback, usage data, and testing results to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Develop recommendations for design enhancements and feature prioritization.
- Support iterative design processes aligned with agile development methodologies.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of platform usability and user satisfaction.
Organizational Engagement and Reporting
- Participate in relevant team meetings and reporting coordination calls.
- Contribute to proposal development, concept notes, and fundraising materials as needed.
- Support other project-related activities and responsibilities as assigned.
Profile: Qualifications and Attributes
Profile (Qualifications and Attributes):
- Degree in user experience design, interaction design, human-computer interaction, graphic design, information architecture, digital product design, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Minimum 3−5 years of experience designing digital platforms, web applications, learning platforms, knowledge management systems, or related products.
- Demonstrated experience conducting user-centered design processes, including research, prototyping, testing, and iterative design.
- Strong experience developing wireframes, mockups, prototypes, and user interface designs.
- Knowledge of usability principles, accessibility standards, information architecture, and interaction design methodologies.
- Experience collaborating with software developers and multidisciplinary project teams.
- Proficiency with industry-standard design and prototyping tools.
- Strong visual communication, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Ability to translate complex user needs into practical and intuitive design solutions.
- Experience designing educational platforms, knowledge management systems, or professional learning environments is highly desirable.
- Experience supporting nonprofit, international development, justice sector, or public sector projects is an asset.
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills. Knowledge of Ukrainian is an asset.
- Preferably based in Ukraine or able to travel to Ukraine during the contract period if needed.
