About APOPO

APOPO is an award-winning Belgian non-governmental organisation established in 1997 and currently operating in 10 countries. APOPO’s mission is to protect people and the environment with the help of scent-detection animals.

The organisation trains and deploys dogs and rats in humanitarian programmes, including the detection of explosives, diseases and illegally trafficked goods, as well as search and rescue operations.

APOPO has more than 300 operational animals, most of which support mine action activities. This makes APOPO the largest animal detection operator in the sector.

APOPO in Ukraine

Following Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine has been severely affected by landmines, cluster munitions and other explosive remnants of war.

APOPO supports the survey and clearance of potentially hazardous areas through the use of Technical Survey Dog teams.

APOPO registered in Ukraine in 2023. The organisation’s main office is located in Kyiv, while its dog training centre is based in Krasylivka, Brovary District, Kyiv Region.

Mine action activities are conducted in cooperation with Mines Advisory Group and the Ukrainian Deminers Association in regions prioritised by the Government of Ukraine.

About the role

We are looking for a Field Interpreter and Translator to provide spoken and written Ukrainian-English and English-Ukrainian interpretation and translation.

The postholder will support international trainers, field managers, supervisors, dog-handler teams and programme management by ensuring clear and accurate communication during training and operational activities.

This role is important to the safety and effectiveness of our field operations. The Field Interpreter and Translator will help overcome language barriers and promote mutual understanding between Ukrainian and international colleagues.

This is not an office-based position. The role involves outdoor work, regular and extended travel, and work in field environments.

The position may also require travel to Cambodia to support dog-handler trainees during a training period of approximately three to four months. APOPO will provide the required equipment and uniform and will cover approved travel, accommodation and per diem expenses.

After completing the training period, the postholder will continue working with APOPO in Ukraine and accompany dog-handler teams in operational regions.

Main responsibilities

• Provide consecutive interpretation during training sessions, meetings and operational activities.
• Translate documents, reports, instructions and other materials from Ukrainian into English and from English into Ukrainian.
• Review and edit written materials to ensure accuracy, clarity and consistency.
• Develop and regularly update a Ukrainian-English glossary of relevant professional and technical terminology.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date operational terminology.
• Prepare and submit required documentation and reports on time.
• Maintain the confidentiality of information obtained through the role.
• Communicate with colleagues in a professional and respectful manner.
• Follow APOPO’s safety procedures, Code of Conduct and organisational values.
• Provide the line manager with regular updates on activities, achievements, challenges and operational needs.
• Perform other relevant duties in support of APOPO’s programme activities.

Candidate profile

We are looking for a candidate with:

• Excellent spoken and written Ukrainian and English.
• A university degree in translation, linguistics, foreign languages or another relevant field.
• One to three years of professional experience in translation, interpretation or editing.
• Previous experience with an international or humanitarian organisation would be an advantage.
• Experience providing interpretation during training sessions, meetings or field activities.
• The ability to prepare clear, concise and factual reports.
• Good Microsoft Office skills.
• Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
• The ability to plan and complete tasks independently with minimal supervision.
• The ability to work effectively in an international and multicultural team.
• A flexible approach to working hours and operational requirements.
• Willingness and ability to travel regularly and for extended periods within Ukraine and abroad.
• Willingness to work in remote and conflict-affected areas.
• A positive attitude towards working with dogs and the ability to work comfortably around them.
• Knowledge of Spanish or another foreign language would be an additional advantage.
